Power vs Force
Here is this months coaching question…. Where do you get your
power from?
Just stop and think for a moment… are you a really powerful
person? Or are you a forceful person? Which do you believe is
better? Many times, when I listen to clients responses about whether
they see themselves as powerful or forceful, It seems that there is
a deep fear of being powerless and a need to be more powerful.
So I thought we could explore the dynamics of power for the
edification and growth of you wonderful women, because perception of
your power plays a very potent role in
your actions and shaping your relationships, health, your life and
the impact you bring to humanity.
There are two kinds
of power; internal power and external power. External power supports
the capacity for action, whereas internal power supports the
activity of reflection.
And so real personal power results from a journey or adventure
through the different levels from external sources represented by
organizational and political position, expertise, titles, degrees,
control, materials goods, responsibility and ability, whilst ‘inner
power’ is power developed from introspection, personal struggles and
gradual evaluation of your life purpose, from accepting and valuing
one’s self and finally from connecting authentically to that Higher
Source.
Another aspect
of power is…The
capacity to ensure the outcomes we want and prevent those we don’t
want. See comment at the end pertaining to “wants”
Based upon the
amazing work of Janet Olson Hagberg (Real
Power), the first 3 levels of the personal power
leadership journey cover EXTERNAL power (the capacity to act). It is
typically characterized by confidence, competence, expertise, work
titles, level of success, educational degrees, stature and status,
money, self-esteem and recognition. At these levels people are
typically fear-motivated, very focused and active in:
-
Marshalling
resources
-
Meeting their /
organisational goals
-
Managing people
-
Making things
happen for others
-
Achieving
cultural success
-
Focus on
survival / Making a living
The
power levels, 4 to 6, are focused on INTERNAL Power (the capacity to
reflect) – These people explore their inner landscapes and inner
passions, they are a model of integrity, they have long lasting
effects and impact, their work is meaningful and they find meaning
in life.
People can be on
different levels of power at different times in their lives, and
with different people or organisations. However, each of us has a
‘home’ level that represents our typical perception of personal
power. People do not proceed to new levels simply with age or
experience, although these can be factors in the transformation
process.
Level 1 – Powerless
Starting off from external power we begin from the basic
perception of level of powerless or fear of fear. These people might
feel manipulated, trapped or helpless and even sometimes hopeless.
This hopelessness is also related to a low AQ or low resilience
state. This level 1 perception
deals with setbacks by complaining or blaming – abdicating any
responsibility.
People, who feel powerless, may not be
powerless. It’s just a figment of their imagination and belief
systems. They typically have low self-esteem that expresses itself
sometimes as aggression or fear. Many times I see them living in
fear of a higher power based on their perception of a vengeful,
angry, wrathful God (or Boss or partner) who can smite them at any
moment.
Fear is the emotion and belief that holds this person back
the most. And some of the best ways to begin to move out of this
state are to build self–esteem, get positive support, develop new
skills, confront your fears, take responsibility, get out of abusive
relationships, get a coach, appreciate and support yourself,
confront yourself and your shadows and make a new, irrevocable,
positive stand for yourself being valuable, worthy and worthwhile.
Your challenge from
me
– look into your eyes in a mirror for 10 minutes – who do you see?
What is their core fear?
Level 2 – Power by association with…
At this level you gain your power from
others who already have perceived power,
or from learning more. Usually this level of perception regarding
your power is still impacted by your perceived confidence and
competence level, as well as still having a need for definite
security by associating with the “right” people.
In
the workplace this level person is eager to follow others, looking
to connect with others, and actively learning the ropes and seeking
approval or inclusion. They typically deal with setbacks by
colluding or leaning on peer groups for a solution. Fear of not
being good enough often prevails here.
The best way to move forward here is to build
confidence and self-worth, and begin to become more self-aware
around being risk averse.
By beginning to take some small, intelligent,
“risks” you can continue your journey towards freedom and real
power. Once again getting yourself a mentor or coach at this level
would assist you in becoming more competent, exploring new
solutions, building social networks, getting honest constructive
feedback, taking better care of yourself, and standing up a lot more
for your self worth and value.
Your challenge from
me
– Take some small risks – stretch your comfort zone out beyond its
normal range. Push through the fear?
Level 3 – Power by achievement or Symbols of achievement
People at this level of perceived power are
mature, realistic, ambitious, able to compete without
crashing-and-burning completely if they lose, and often have great
expertise in their chosen area of focus and work.
The belief in this power originates from
accomplishing feats or acquiring the culturally recognised signs of
outward achievement and success; this is the level at which many
professionals, managers, employees and employing organizations
operate. Many times the apparent power at this level is based upon
the egotistical and sexy belief that knowing, having and doing
more, is the powerbase source.
These people are eager to lead, know the ropes, get
things done “right” and can be compelling and persuasive. They deal
with setbacks by concealing, rationalizing or fighting back
courageously
The challenge here is to be self-aware enough to
see that you may be stuck and hooked into the external power/ mental
/ego aspects here. Most people get stuck here. By embracing real
integrity, self honesty, and some confusion, you invite catalysts
for change into your space.
Powerful ways to move onward are to become more
self-aware and focus on the NOW FACTOR; take time to be alone and
reflect deeply within; embrace change and crisis as powerful
opportunities for growth; spend time with people who you believe
live a truly powerful life; design a Purpose Plan for your
self-leadership, self-discovery and growth.
Your challenge from
me
– build self-awareness and deep introspection or reflection, and
then become certain enough to be uncertain about what creates your
power.
Level 4 – Power by Reflection – Going Within
At this level the
power of thoughtful competence and integrity is marked by a search
for, and transition to, deeper meaning. A person at this level is
confident, competent, emotionally and egotistically strong,
reflective, comfortable with who they are, their personal style, and
skilled at mentoring or coaching others. They are viewed as strong
individuals having the ability to expose their true feelings or
beliefs no matter with whom they relate.
People at this level of personal power are beginning to integrate
and
align their inner & outer worlds. They are willing to risk failure
or being perceived as “different”
A person at this
level reflects more accurately than others on concepts such as their
own competence and skill levels, ways of being perceived and style
of operation. They have the ability to reflect on past experience
and lessons learnt. This is the beginning of turning knowledge into
wisdom….of turning fear into love. Of turning making a living to
living a life. This is the beginning of human alchemy.
People respect
level 4’s advice, approach them for counsel and ask for their
recommendations. Persons who score high in this level 4 are people
who are relied upon to accomplish tasks.
For people at level
4 to move to the next power level, they have to begin to let go of
their ego, which means not looking solely at personal gain in a
situation, but the benefits and gain to others, the organization, or
the larger vision and destiny of the group. They also have the
opportunity to confront their fears, forgive others and themselves.
Their most powerful step is to turn ME into WE. Most women do this
anyway it seems!
Your challenge from
me
– Face your fears and push through them. Start to share your WISDOM
with love.
The move to the
next level is where many people stumble, get stuck and stagnate.
It’s like the beginning of a steep mountain climb. This is where
faith, courage and action meet to deliver real transformation. This
step requires letting go of control,
moving beyond your ego and intellect, recognising, accepting and
embracing your Shadow as part of the journey of going to your core.
For at this core you will discover the real you, you’ll experience
intimacy with your Higher Power, and if you’ve done all of the
above… you will begin to glimpse and encounter your perfection and
wisdom.
For you
to move towards this process requires a committed and strong will.
You will definitely gain benefit from the services of a “powerful”
coach or mentor to support your journey into inner space and to hold
you accountable and focused. So select someone who can support your
healing, stretching, learning and letting go.
Your challenge from
me
– challenge all of your learnt paradigms. Stop thinking so much and
start feeling – stay in the NOW.
Level 5 – Power by
Purpose
This level 5, is
especially different to the previous 4 levels. The distinctiveness
and power differential lies in the inner strength of the person, in
a direct relation to the perceived power or control of the
organizational or social system being compared. So If you feel
internally more powerful that your Chairman, he really has no power
or hold over you. At this level real freedom and emotional freedom
becomes a distinct possibility.
People living at
this level listen to, and value their “inner intuitive voice. Women
have a distinct advantage here. These people are also free from
pressure to conform and thereby they are more congruent because they
no longer have a need to be “approved of” or play and fit into
various roles placed upon them by society and their contexts.
These level 5
personal power people know their strengths and limitations, and
accept both without struggling to constantly resolve or “fix” them.
They are usually unassuming, peaceful, self-assured, on purpose,
spiritual, self accepting and munificent with their space and time
to assist and guide others.
Their ultimate
objective, through empowering others, is to help raise us all, love
us as perfect human beings, give us responsibility, trust us, learn
from us and be led by us.
A driving factor that moves level 5 people to the next
personal power level is a “need to understand the universe.” They
challenge
assumptions, embrace unpopular issues, are aware enough to
anticipate the ripple effects of decisions and can become
TRANSFORMATIONAL leaders and catalysts.
This is where resilience really stands as a quality. These people
are undaunted by setbacks as they have their eye on the final result
- they keep Envisioning “the mountaintop”. They create meaning
rather than meaning being created automatically.
Your challenge from
me
– Give away your parking-in-your-comfort-zone – stand out, and be
fully that wise, kind loving individual – that which you already
are. Intentionally create your own positive meaning for “stuff” in
your life.
Level 6 – Powered by Wisdom
People at level 6
are “powerless” although still warm, inviting, supportive, serene,
and nurturing individuals. They see the whole picture of the game
we call life. They are comfortable with paradox. At this level you
have discovered and embraced the point of recognising you do not
have, or need, Power. External power no longer holds any value to,
or for, you or them.
These individuals
are extremely ethical but still realistic. They comprehend and even
integrate the inevitable evils of the world into their model and
vision of the world, and yet they also detest acts, and events, that
deliberately harm others. Their purpose or passion moves constantly
along in quiet service of their community
There is one more
level after this – “Humanness”, where these people live as though we
were all one.
One wise master I
study with, Dr Isa Lindwall of the Lindwall Releasing Foundation of
USA, is the epitome of a level 7 Being.
Always gentle and compassionate. Always a
Mentor to the larger community of humanity. He inspires peace and
love wherever he, and his just as awesome wife, Yolanda, go.
He
is probably one of the MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE I KNOW OF ON THE PLANET
AT THIS TIME!
Living in his space there are no such things as setbacks at all.
There’s only 2 states of life experience; love and lack thereof
(fear).
So
I’d have to conclude that in observing the different levels of power
from powerless to powerful, unconditional love is the true measure,
and means, to move between the two extremes.
My
challenge to you:
To incorporate four letter words into your workplace. Love, care,
ours, heal, feel, open, hear, calm, Soul.
Imagine turning your highly politicized, stressful workplace into a
WOW place. Yes, I know I’m an idealist. But unless we dare to
dream, and dare to act, in new and powerful ways – what’s there to
work for and towards…. Money!?
It’s time to replace forceful with powerful and to replace fear with
love and to replace profits at all costs, with people and profits.
So be it. What is the risk you need to take to move to the
next stage of personal power

Ps
– If you put thoughts out into the world that you “want” something –
you will receive just that … the feeling of “wanting” something!
Remember that the universe is like a big photostat machine and it
will replicate and respond to your thoughts, and attract to you,
what you think about most as a sponsoring or initial thought.
A better thought process could be something like, “I am part of, or
connected to, the Highest Source, and so I have all the power
required to achieve my purpose effortlessly”. |
