It's interesting
to observe the parallels between a biological entity like a
human body and a business entity like a company or a group
of people.
Just as your body is made up of individual cells (People),
who clump together to form larger groups (teams), who group
and work together to form organs (Departments), who group
and work together to for the entire body (Company). so to
can we observe a real parallel.
Just as in a human body, the lifeblood of the business is
energy. Energy to do the work, energy to remain resilient,
energy to overcome, energy to maintain, energy to grow and
repair. Without sufficient energy, the body will die. It's
the same in your company.
Another critical component is communication. without clear,
consistent, open communication your body would fall apart.
Most companies have fallen apart, inside, it's just a thin
layer or veneer on the outside that hides and holds the
internal disease and malfunction from the outside world.
Beginning with the smallest cell, in biology each
cell has it own innate intelligence, and it will scan the environment it perceives and make a quick
decision that has devastating affects upon its ability to
perform effectively.
If the cell perceives the environment
at hostile, dangerous or unfriendly it will switch to
protect or survival mode - basically almost shutdown. Humans in a business
environment do exactly the same. Have a look at your
workplace politics, that you may or may not have any
influence over. How does the undercurrent impact work
performance, satisfaction, health, and engagement.
My research indicates that on average around 65%-75% of the
average persons' daily energy is expended in
self-preservation from the hostile corporate political
environment.
So when this singe cell/human has scanned the environment,
they make a decision to behave in a way that they feel will
ensure survival in that perceived hostile environment.
They go into their protect/survive mode. That means, low
creativity, low risk, low exposure, minimal effort, minimal
commitment to the entire body as focus is on personal
survival.
